23 Feb. Monday Night RAW Thoughts

It’s been a while since I’ve done something like this, but hey no time like the present, right? Besides I need to get back into the habit of doing something like this; thats the entire point of a blog right?

Anyway, I still have a bit of time before the show starts tonight. And I will be doing this while also making some dinner and bouncing back and forth doing some work on this page. So we shall see how it goes.

  • I really dislike how bland the intro to the show is since the start of the Netflix era. With the amount of content the WWE is able to push out these days there is such a lack of distiction between the brands / shows.
  • There also seems to be a lack of urgency in regards of what happens storyline wise on the weekly episodes of Monday Night RAW compared to the Attitude Era I grew up in. I know that it’s a rooted favoritism bias of the “prime” years of wrestling entertainment; but there have been multiple times that I have watched the recap show via YouTube and felt no catch to go watch the entire show. Could it be a change of the times and how we consume media? Sure, I’m not denying that. But I’m just saying that I’ve yet to feel that “can’t miss TV” feeling. Age and life are contributing factors as well; but I can honestly say that when something catches my attention I will look forward to seeing more of it (Think “Better Call Saul” or “Breaking Bad”) and am anxious for the next episode. Wrestling has been missing that “hook” recently.
  • That being said- there are definitely some superstars I look forward to watching from this generation: “Dirty” Dominick Mysterio has mastered the ability of being that lovable douchebag. Bron Breaker has the intensity and the look to carry the company for years to come. Drew McIntrye has become a personal favorite over the last couple of years. His character work has been stellar. GUNTHER is another character that I’ve grown fond of and would have loved to have seen during some of the earlier eras of professional wrestling.

I mean at the end of the day wrestling is entertainment, and I won’t pretend that it doesn’t entertain me still. It just feels a bit more… formulaic then what I prefer. Although to be fair I’m not quite sure how one flips that switch so to say to make it feel less “by the numbers”. Some of the brutal negatives of being under the TKO ownership group I suppose.

The show is now underway, I will be adding to this list as my thoughts come to me regarding this episode of RAW.

  • What is the point of a brand split if superstars are able to show up freely between shows? Cody Rhodes is currently in the chase for the WWE Undisputed Championship or for the un-initiated the Friday night SmackDown! championship!
  • To segway off the last point, now The Vision is threatening to show up on Friday nights? As much go away heat that Logan Paul is able to generate, The Vision as a faction has felt lifeless, directionless and as nothing major for some time now. Rollins and now Breakker now being injured are clear contributors to their momentum to go off the rails.
  • Jey Uso *sucks*. Period.
  • I really need to go back and revisit some Chad Gable matches. The dude is the real deal. Americano vs Americano should be fun at WrestleMania.
  • I know it doesn’t need to be said but holy shit does the ad placement and timing on Netflix absolutely KILLS the flow of whichever match we are watching. If we cannot go without seeing them, could we perhaps get a picture in picture solution as a compromise? Two to three minute interruptions at random times can cause the viewer at home to miss out on a good portion of a match. Is it a way to push ticket sales? Yeah I guess, but the fact that reports say that international markets do not have to view the commercials makes it even more frustrating.
  • Liv Morgan is a generational talent. She knows her character and plays it to perfection.
  • This mystery box angle reeks of Gobbledy-Gooker
  • So… is Brock Lesnar apart of The Vision or not? Paul Heyman seems to be representing both the group and Brock- yet doing so independently of one another?

Okay, I’ll be honest. I zoned out a bit during the Lesnar segment and ended up visiting with my dad and playing with his puppies for a bit. I’ll watch the rest of the episode later and see if anything catches my eye.
